CASTING WITH A MISSION.

It serves as a compass for our values in collaboration and creation.
We continually evaluate our mission and welcome feedback from artists regarding our company values in both theory and in practice, ensuring that we evolve with the dynamic needs of our industry.

Mission & Values.

  • At Evolution Casting, we are redefining the role of the casting director as an essential design and dramaturgical collaborator. By integrating our industry expertise, dramaturgical approach, interrogating the intersection of text and identity and negotiation skills from the very start of a production, we aim to shape the vision and expand the creative team’s imagination. Our approach challenges the traditional notion of ‘the best person for the job’ by rejecting rigid, objective standards that often exclude those who don’t fit conventional moulds. Instead, we embrace the subjectivity of talent assessment, aligning it closely with the unique vision of each creative project. Through this, we strive to dismantle outdated barriers and broaden how talent and suitability are understood and measured.

  • We are committed to radically enhancing representation of historically and systemically excluded communities across stages, screens, creative teams and behind the scenes, including artists who are Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander; people of colour; women; LGBTQIA+; trans and gender-diverse; disabled, d/Deaf, hard of hearing, neurodiverse, and body diverse artists. Where appropriate, we set a minimum goal of 25% representation for First Nations and/or people of colour in our casts, always striving to exceed this.

We ask questions before, during and after the casting process to learn more about the artists coming into our spaces to inform our practices, ensuring that casting decisions are authentic and reflective of diverse experiences, as well as help us learn who is consistently does not have access to the opportunities we provide.

Our commitment extends to supporting new, homegrown work that resonates with the demographics of so-called Australia, while also considering global talent when necessary.

We challenge traditional casting norms and preconceived character portrayals, reimagining projects with fresh perspectives. Representation is crucial—roles must authentically reflect the experiences they portray, and when this isn't feasible, we consult with communities to explore alternative approaches. Our approach to representative casting aims to reshape narratives and foster more inclusive, respectful portrayals.

  • We prioritise the quality of representation for often excluded communities, focusing on how their identities meaningfully fit within narratives. We reject harmful stereotypes and, when such portrayals are necessary, consult closely with affected artists to ensure respectful discussion and advocating for additional support throughout the creative process. Our commitment extends to placing actors from diverse backgrounds in complex, central roles, moving beyond peripheral parts to promote true inclusivity in storytelling.

  • We aim to create an environment where every artist feels empowered to express their unique needs, with our commitment to accommodating these requirements within reasonable limits. We foster adaptable audition spaces that meet both the creative team’s needs and individual artist’s requirements, prioritising joy and flexibility over rigid formality. We address knowledge gaps for emerging artists by offering additional support, ensuring all actors enter auditions with confidence. Our open channels for communication, including anonymous feedback options, ensure transparency and accountability in our collaborative process.

  • Our commitment extends beyond casting a project; we are dedicated to nurturing and maximising the potential of every artist we encounter. Whether or not we’ve worked with an artist before, our door is always open for feedback and connection. We believe that knowledge is power and are eager to share our expertise to help every artist reach their full potential.
